CARP sends advertisements using multicast by default, but can be configured to use uni-cast announcements to a specific peer via the peer and peer6 parameters. Why unicast ? Using CARP in unicast mode can be appropriate in a two-router topology, as communication only needs to occur between 2 specific peers and also multicast support is often filtered, limited, and so unreliable.
